The Battle of Stow

We walked for several minutes thinking we were perhaps taking the wrong route, but eventually we found the monument.

We were puzzled as to the sense of the Parliamentarians attacking uphill, but soon realized that a flank from the left had come up another side and totally surprised the Royalists.

The Calvary escaped but the foot soldiers were chased back through Stow to the market square and 1000 of them were held captive in St. Edward’s Church. The Royalists were defeated, as this was the King’s last field army, and he surrendered in May 1646, and was later beheaded.

We followed the trail into Stow-on-the-Wold.....
